After learning from Christopher that Wikus can be cured in the mothership, and the confiscated fluid is crucial to his plan of returning to the mothership, Wikus attempts to acquire alien weapons from the District 9 Nigerian arms dealer Obesandjo. Obesandjo wants to eat Wikus’s alien body parts to gain his abilities, but Wikus manages to seize an alien weapon and escape.

Wikus and Christopher fight their way into the MNU lab and retrieve the fuel. However, after witnessing the cruel and barbarous experiments MNU has performed on his people, Christopher decides that he must return home to seek help. Wikus, after hearing from Christopher that it would take 3 years until he comes back and cures Wikus, knocks Christopher down and attempts to fly the module himself. However, the module is shot down by Koobus’ forces.

Wikus goes inside a mechanized alien battle suit in Obesandjo’s base. Instead of running away, he rescues Christopher from the mercenaries and stays behind to fend off the mercenaries, buying time for Christopher. Koobus destroys the suit and is about to execute Wikus when the aliens attack him and saves Wikus. Christopher flies the dropship to the mothership and leaves Earth, promising to return after 3 years.

MNU’s experiments are exposed, and the aliens are moved to a new camp. Tania, Wikus’ wife, finds a metal flower on her doorstep. It is implied from the end scene that it was from Wikus, now fully transformed into one of the aliens.

My thoughts!

I first came to know this film for its incredible fight scene at the end when Wikus puts on the alien mechanic suit and fights the mercenaries. The special effects are incredible, and the graphic effects of Wikus in pain as the suit gets crippled, was so memorable to me that I could not help but buy the film and watch it myself. After watching District 9, I came to the realization that this film is not all about the action and the special effects. Instead, it is more focused on themes such as racism, humanity and xenophobia. The explicit discrimination towards the “prawns” that are depicted throughout the film is a direct representation of xenophobia and racism. Also the emphasis of Wikus becoming more humane as he becomes less biologically human is a memorable irony. What I do not understand until now is how the alien species, who possess much advanced technology than humans do, happened to take refuge on Earth.
