All about the movie!
In 2009, American geologist Adrian Helmsley visits astrophysicist Satnam Tsurutani in India and learns that neutrinos from a massive solar flare are heating the Earth’s core. Helmsley presents his information to White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser, who brings him to meet the U.S. President Thomas Wilson.
In 2010, Wilson and other world leaders initiate a secret project to ensure humanity’s survival. China and the G8 nations begin building 9 arks, each capable of carrying 100,000 people, in the Himalayas near Cho Ming, Tibet.
2 years later in 2012, struggling Los Angeles science-fiction writer Jackson Curtis is a chauffeur for a Russian Billionaire Yuri Karpov. His former wife Kate and their children Noah and Lilly live with Kate’s boyfriend, Gordon Silberman, who is a plastic surgeon. Jackson takes the children camping in Yellowstone National Park. They are caught by the army when they enter a fenced off area. After being released, they meet a conspiracy theorist Charlie Frost. That night, Jackson watches one of Charlie’s videos of Charles Hapgood’s theory that polar shifts and the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar predict a 2012 phenomenon and the end of the world.
After Jakcson and his children return home, earthquakes begin in California. Jackson rents a private plane, and rescues his family from a 10.9 magnitude earthquake. They escape Los Angeles as much of the city collapses into the Pacific Ocean.
The group flies to Yellowstone to retrieve a map from Charlie with the ark’s location. As they narrowly manage to escape the erupting Yellowstone, Charlie is killed while covering the eruption through radio broadcast. The group lands in Las Vegas to find a larger plane, after realizing that the arks are located in the Himalayas. In Vegas, they meet Yuri, his twin sons Alec and Oleg, his girlfriend Tamara and their pilot Sasha.
President Wilson remains in Washington D.C. to address the nation while millions of people die in earthquakes and megatsunamis worldwide, including himself. Carl assumes the position of acting commander-in-chief.
As Jakson’s group reaches China, their plane runs out of fuel. Sasha sacrifices while trying to stop the plane from crashing, while the rest of the group escapes in a luxurious car stored in the cargo hold. They are spotted by the Chinese Air Force helicopters. While Yuri and his sons, who have tickets, are brought to the arks, the Curtis family, with Tamara and Gordon are abandoned. The abandoned group are picked up by Tibet monks in the Himalayas. With their help, they sneak onto Ark 4. A mega tsunami breaches the Himalayas, causing chaos. During the tsunami, Gordon, Yuri, and Tamara are killed. Jackson manages to reunite with his family.
27 days later, the waters from the tsunami are receding, and the arks approach the Cape of Good Hope, where the Drakensberg mountains, not the highest mountain range on Earth, are emerging. The movie ends in a happy and romantic tone. From space, it is revealed that the continent of Africa and a few pieces of Europe and Asia are the only remaining landmass on Earth.

My thoughts!
2012 was a huge blockbuster hit if I remember it correctly. When I watched this film as a kid, I was convinced that the world was going to end in 2012. I remember everyone in school was talking about the end of the world, asking the teachers and adults whether if it was true or not. During this chaotic period, the movie was enough to make me go paranoid. However, when I rewatched the film, I still remembered the funny scenes such as when Charlie dies while broadcasting live the erupting Yellowstone, and when Gordon has to fly a huge plane while the only training he received was from a plane simulator. The film 2012 was a great movie with well balanced elements of action, comedy, satire, and romance.
